Name origins

The Welsh name Williams means "son of William" and derives from an ancient French given name (Guillaume) with Germanic elements (Wilhelm):

wil = desire, will; and helm = helmet, protection

Therefore, Williams is commonly thought to mean "resolute (willful) protection."

One of the first Williams of note is William the Conqueror (William I of England). Following his conquest of 1066, William's reign brought Norman culture to England and William became the most popular personal name in Britain for a time.
